Streatham a perfect 10 after victory over Chelmsford Chieftains

BY DAVID CARR
Defenceman Andrew Cook admits Streatham are buzzing after a hard-fought 3-2 win over Chelmsford Chieftains made it a perfect 10 out of 10 league wins for the South London side.

Cook joined the club in the summer and bagged a man-of-the-match award for his performance in the top-of-the-table clash, played out in front of another large crowd at the Streatham Arena.

“The atmosphere was electric all night,” said Cook,  pictured inset, after the RedHawks triumphed for the first time in 10 attempts against the Essex side.

“We made it harder work for ourselves than we would have liked. It led to an anxious final five minutes but we showed great character.”

Streatham had bounced back from an early Ross Brears goal to lead the Chieftains 3-1. Goals from Vanya Antonov, Danny Ingoldsby and Brandon Miles put the RedHawks in control, before a Darren Brown goal piled the pressure on in the final stages.

Streatham go into a double header weekend with a tricky road game in Bracknell on Saturday followed by a home game against unbeaten Solent Devils on Sunday evening.

The Devils are one place above Streatham in the league, thanks to more games played, and have proved to be a real surprise package under coach Alex Murray this year.

“To be undefeated at this stage in the season is testament to how we are playing as a team and we’re all buying in to what Carrsy [coach Adam Carr] is asking,” explained the 25-year-old blueliner, who hails from Tyneside.

“The run up to Christmas is massive for us. We can’t underestimate Bracknell away. When we played them last we conceded more goals than we had in any other game, so it’s important we turn up with the right mindset to get the job done.

“Solent at home is a game we are all looking forward to and is likely to provide us with another hard test.

“The atmosphere in the room before these big games is always buzzing and I hope the fans provide the same energy as they did last weekend.”Streatham have no fresh injury worries but will be conscious of any potential disciplinary review following a post-game fracas after the Chelmsford game.
