Summer transfer window signing handed Charlton Athletic captaincy

Summer signing Greg Docherty has been handed the captain’s armband for Charlton’s 2024-25 League One season.

The 27-year-old midfielder was snapped up by the Addicks when his Hull City contract expired this summer.

Docherty also skippered the South Londoners in last weekend’s friendly loss at AFC Wimbledon.

He told the club’s official website: “It’s a huge honour – I think that goes without saying.

“To be tasked with being the captain of this club in the stage we’re at and where we want to get to, it’s a real, real privilege. It’s a real proud moment for me personally and also for my family as well.”

Charlton manager Nathan Jones added: “Greg was one that we earmarked, in terms of bringing him in, for his leadership qualities, how driven he is, how he trains and how he acts. It’s really important to have those players in the building and we feel Greg ticks the boxes of what we want here as captain.

“We always want to add leaders to the group and I think we’ve done that. There’s ones who are quite vocal in what they do and then others that lead by example.”

Lloyd Jones has been appointed vice-captain.

Addicks boss Jones said: “I signed Lloyd at Luton believing there were those leadership qualities.

“Lloyd’s showing real maturity, he’s a great lad to have around the place and he has all the tools to be a top centre-half.”
