Sunderland boss Lee Johnson slams EFL for allowing AFC Wimbledon match to go ahead

BY RICHARD CAWLEY

Sunderland boss Lee Johnson has slammed the EFL for letting last night’s League One game against AFC Wimbledon go ahead.

The Black Cats were missing eight players after a Covid-19 outbreak.

But Sunderland went ahead with the fixture as they did not want to risk the points being awarded to their opponents.

The match finished 1-1 with Ryan Longman netting for the Dons.

Johnson said: “That game should have been called off, no doubt in my mind.

“I cannot believe we’ve had to play it, considering the circumstance. We found out very late and didn’t get any help – at all – from the EFL. I’ve never known carnage like it. Every time I picked a team, three players got taken out of it. Inside I’m raging.”

The Dons had matches postponed at the start of November after a number of positive results forced them to self-isolate.
