Surrey Cricket Club’s Tom Curran called up for England Ashes duty after Finn injury setback

Tom Curran has been called up by England for their Ashes tour after fast bowler Steven Finn was forced to drop out with cartilage damage in his left knee.

Surrey’s Curran has got the nod ahead of Yorkshire’s Liam Plunkett and Middlesex’s Toby Helm.

The 22-year-old, born in South Africa, has represented England in all white-ball formats.

Curran told Surrey’s website: “I’m delighted and I’m so excited.

“I’m very proud and humbled. I found out on Tuesday morning. I was in the later gym session at training, so I had a lie-in and woke up to a couple of missed calls. It’s been a real rollercoaster of a year, but a year I will never forget and I am so excited to travel out to Australia. I’m very privileged to be experiencing this.”

Curran has made 150 appearances for Surrey and taken over 300 wickets.

His inclusion takes the number of Surrey players on England Ashes duty to three with Mark Stoneman and Ben Foakes already selected.

The first Test takes place in Adelaide on November 23.
