Tennis: Catford Wanderers in entertaining home draw against Oakwood
Catford Wanderers ladies’ third side fought out an entertaining draw against visitors Oakwood on Saturday.
Christine Court and Kylie Makhani got the better of their opposing first pair Cathy Bennett and Sarah Crickett, winning 7-5 6-3 . They took the first set in the second round against Cathy Martin and Lou Troke 6-4, only to fade away and lose 2-6 in the second set.
Wanderers’ Nicole Martin and Liz Murphy lost their opening game 1-6 4-6 but redeemed themselves when pitted against Bennett and Crickett. They lost their first set 4-6 but hit the right form at the right time to take the second set 6-1 . This resulted in a draw – a fair result overall.
Catford’s second string ladies had a midweek evening fixture against Hayes but were second best on the night.
Sue Rice-Vine and Lilla Brown halved their opening match 5-7 6-4 against Sally Hills and Caroline Pear, only for Toni Boardman and Kylie Makhani to lose their match. The second round was not completed before the agreed finishing time, which meant Hayes got the two points.
Catford’s mens side drew at Hayes. The Wanderers team was John and Tom Allen, Julian Langley, Will Liney, Martin O’Brien and Tinashe Sithole.
