Tennis: Round-up of the winners at Catford Wanderers’ final day

Julian Langley’s one-year reign as Catford Wanderers’ club champion came to an end when he lost 2-6 6-3 (10-8 ) to the 2019 champion Lyndon Douglas at their finals day.

Langley looked set to retain his title, leading 5-1 in the deciding championship tie break, but Douglas battled back to cut out his earlier errors.

Annis Frimpong, 15, proved too strong for Julia Garling in retaining the ladies title on a 6-3 6-0 scoreline.

Frimpong’s big serve and powerful cross-court  drives always had her in command.

She went on to win the ladies doubles with veteran partner Lilla Brown. They completely demolished holders Stephanie James and Julia Garling (6-3 6-1).

There was some consolation for James as she won the mixed title partnered by Douglas, triumphing 6-7 6-2 (10-3 ) against Martin O’Brien and Julia Garling.

Brian Brass and Julian Langley won the mens doubles,  defeating Rob Dawbarn and Martin O Brien (7-6 6-4)  and added the veterans doubles to their trophy cupboard, seeing off John Clay and Rob Dawbarn 6-4 6-3 .

The mixed plate event was won by Andy Hellier and Kylie Makhni, who beat John Townsend and Monica Romagnoli 6-1 6-4.

The Dave Elkins Trophy went to Gerry Taylor and Len Mulholland,  who had a 6-2 7-5 win over John Dowsett and Liz Murphy.

Jeff Titus and Sarah Griffin accounted for John Townsend and Tae Catford 6-4 2-6 (10-5 ) in the Costelloe Cup final
