Tennis: Senior veterans earn win for Catford Wanderers
Catford Wanderers’ senior veterans defeated David Lloyd Sidcup, built around the doubles partnership of John Clay and Rob Dawbarn
The duo hammered out the decisive opening match win against John Hannon and Mike Smith – 6-1 7-6. They went on to see off Tony Mills and Steve James 6-3 6-1.
Wanderers’ second pair of Clive Richardson and Denis Costelloe lost 6-3 6-3 to Hannon and Smith but halved their encounter against Mills and James to leave the final result 2.5-1.5.
Catford’s midweek mixed fixture versus Bexley resulted in the same scoreline only this time Catford were on the receiving end.
Bexley had a trump card in Kent player Ian Milligan, who showed his county class with partner Edna George. They had little difficulty against Wanderers Leigh Cole and Julie Vouillemin (6-1 6- 1).
Rob Dawbarn and Lilla Brown levelled the match by beating David Broome and Janice Brain 6-3 6-2. The second round ladies doubles saw George and Brain overpower Vouillemin and Brown (6-1 6-1). Dawbarn and Cole shared sets against Milligan and Broome.
Catford mens’ team of John Norris, Steve Owens, Adam Savage and Greg Gustard went down 4-0 to Beckenham.
