‘That was tame!’ – Oxford United manager Karl Robinson on Valley boos for Charlton Athletic

Former Charlton Athletic manager Karl Robinson felt the half-time boos dished out in Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Oxford United was “quite tame” compared to when he was in charge at The Valley.

The Liverpudlian left SE7 with a point this weekend.

Marcus Browne struck them ahead before Jayden Stockley headed home Charlie Kirk’s cross in the second half.

Addicks supporters booed their team as they left the pitch at the break.

Robinson had 16 months as boss of the South Londoners before leaving for his current employers in March 2018.

He said: “If those players think that is disgruntled at half-time – try when Roland Duchatelet was here! Jesus Christ, I thought that was quite tame.

“The Charlton fans stuck with them. There were a few boos but that is because people are frustrated.

“I know very well that you’re going to get criticised for performances like that.

“In the second half they got behind their team.”

Robinson expressed his admiration for Kirk, whose quality cross left Stockley with a simple headed finish.

“The brightness of Kirk, to know what is around him and to dig that out – that’s why you signed him two years ago. Weirdly he then goes to Blackpool and almost does it at Blackpool as well.

“He’s got some talent, the boy. I said to him at the end that I knew he’d been through a difficult time with his family situations, but he’s some player. You couldn’t want a worst player on the ball for us and a worst player at the back post attacking the ball

“One thing this stadium does when you get back to 1-1, it’s so hard for the away team to find another gear. After the goal, we were the better team.

“We’re third in the xG table for chances created. We’ve been playing really well with all our best players out injured.

“When Dobson breaks through I thought: ‘This is the story of our season’ but my keeper bails me out with a wonder save late on.

“It’s two points dropped for our performance, but one point gained when you have a chance like they had – a gilt-edged one late on.”
