‘That will have been playing on him’ – Charlton boss Nathan Jones after Gassan Ahadme gets first Addicks goal

Charlton boss Nathan Jones highlighted the importance of forward Gassan Ahadme getting off the mark with his first Addicks goal.

The striker, signed from Ipswich Town for an undisclosed fee in the summer, bundled a corner home early in the second-period as the South Londoners edged Shrewsbury Town 1-0 at Croud Meadow.

Ahadme, 23, has started all six League One fixtures this campaign but had to wait patiently for his first strike in Charlton colours.

Jones said: “I could play it down. I don’t care who scores as long as we score one more than the opposition at least then that is all that matters to me. But it’s important sometimes for strikers to get goals, for certain people to get goals.

“It’s excellent to score from a set-play because we work religiously. We haven’t scored enough. Lloyd’s a big threat and with what we have in the side we should be scoring more. We’ve got good size, good aggression and some good technical players. It’s pleasing to do that. It’s pleasing to see Gas get off the mark because that will have been playing on him.

“He’s a focal point, we brought him in for that. He hasn’t been used to playing like we do. He’s had to adjust, and it takes time. I’m pleased for him, but we’ve got a good squad. You saw Miles Leaburn coming back last night. He looked not himself, but you can see what he’s got.

“We’re in a good place. We’ve got some players today who weren’t even involved – Karoy (Anderson), REG (Rarmani Edmonds-Green), Josh Edwards. It shows we’re in a really good place, plus all the ones that came on and impacted.”
