‘That’s clear’ – Lampard on Chelsea’s problem after Real Madrid Champions League exit

Chelsea interim manager Frank Lampard said it’s “clear” that his side’s problem is scoring goals after their 2-0 Champions League quarter-final second-leg defeat at home to Real Madrid.

The Blues were knocked out of the competition on Tuesday night, losing 4-0 on aggregate across two legs against Los Blancos.

Brazilian winger Rodrygo scored two second-half goals to book Real Madrid’s place in the final four.

Chelsea registered 19 shots but failed to find a way past Thibaut Courtois.

“That’s clear, isn’t it?” Lampard told BT Sport of Chelsea’s goalscoring problems.

“It’s not for the want of trying. We had a lot of numbers in the box and got in loads of crossing positions, but if you don’t take those chances.

“If the tie goes 2-1 at any point, you really would have felt the crowd turn. It’s the first game since I have been back where I feel we said things before the game, and we have really implemented them. That is a must for us for the rest of the season.

“We played really well for 60 minutes.

“Maybe it’s normal after the goal – the tie at 3-0 – we make some changes to go for it. We had some really good chances, and at this level, you have to take them.

“You don’t want to praise the performance too much because when you lose at this level, it’s finite.

“But where we have been this season, where we are, and what we have got to work towards at this club is one who has been further in this competition many, many times.

“It wasn’t our night. Some players will take that tonight and understand what that is when they come back at this level.”
