‘That’s one of the best moments of my career’ – George Dobson on heroics for comeback kings Charlton Athletic

George Dobson has described his equaliser in the ninth minute of stoppage time – earning Charlton Athletic a 4-4 draw against Ipswich – as one of the best moments in his career.

The Addicks played out a thriller in SE7 on Saturday, twice coming back from a two-goal deficit.

But it looked game over when Ipswich went 4-2 ahead in the fourth minute of added time, Sam Morsy driving the ball beyond Joe Wollacott.

But Terell Thomas cut the deficit in the sixth minute of added time with referee Josh Smith opting to play more than what was on the board put up by fourth official James Oldham.

Dobson’s header looped over Christian Walton to cap off a remarkable League One match.

“I thought the keeper was just going to catch it and it’s looped over his head and gone in,” said the Addicks midfielder. “It was an unbelievable feeling, up there with one of the best I’ve had on a football pitch.

“That’s one of the best [matches] we’ve played, in the second half. To be two goals down twice against a team probably with the biggest budget in the league and the best players in the league shows where we can be. We’re not that far away.

“The other night [the loss to MK] was disappointing. But before that we had the three wins. The performance in the second half has got to give us great confidence. The next set of fixtures leading up to Christmas, after the cup games, we have to stamp our mark and get into the play-off positions.

“Two down with two [minutes] to play, you’re subconsciously thinking ‘we’re struggling here’. But you’ve got to keep going. Terell has done well to get in and get the goal. We spoke to the ref and he said there was two [minutes] to go. In football, two minutes is a long time. It’s one second for that chance. We kept believing.

“I was delighted for it [his header] to hit the net. I really hope we can use it as fuel for everyone at the club to kick on together.

“I was literally trying to keep the ball in play, really. I thought it was going to go over my head. I don’t know if I jumped. The relief and happiness of it was a wonderful moment.”

Ben Garner had been sent off after Ipswich went 2-0 ahead on 52 minutes.

The Charlton boss was incensed by Smith awarding a free-kick for a tackle made by Dobson.

“It was a mad moment because I won the ball for their free-kick which led to the goal,” said Dobson. “You can’t really say too much, but there were some debatable decisions – like there have been in a lot of our games lately.

“Chuks [Aneke] and Corey [Blackett-Taylor] came on and were outstanding. They really gave us impetus and helped to drive the team on.

“As well as the gaffer [who gesticulated wildly to the Covered End to get behind the players], it gave everyone the initiative to really push on. Goals change games and gave us momentum, we used that.”
