‘That’s the most important thing’ – Marti Cifuentes talks through new QPR contract extension
QPR head coach Marti Cifuentes had no doubts about agreeing to sign a new multi-year contract at Loftus Road despite enduring a tough start to his first full season in west London.
It was announced on Monday that Cifuentes had signed a new deal alongside his assistant Xavi Calm following their work in keeping Rangers in the Championship last season.
QPR have picked up just one win from their first eight league games to start the new campaign, but the Catalan boss feels the foundations are in place for future success in W12.
“It’s a combination of things,” Cifuentes explained when asked why he agreed new terms.
“The first one is that the players believe in what we are doing – that’s the most important thing for me. Then, I talked about the supporters and their support since day one when I came here.
“I’m enjoying my time at QPR – it’s an honour for me to represent this club. I want to achieve big things. For me, it’s about getting better every day.
“I appreciate the support from [CEO] Christian [Nourry] and the owners and were going to try to make sure we are at the level of expectations.”
Rangers are still looking for their first home league win of the season following a 3-1 defeat to Hull City on Tuesday night.
Despite a promising start to the game, QPR fell two goals down in the first half at Loftus Road as Cody Drameh and Chris Bedia struck for the visitors.
Nicolas Madsen pulled a goal back from the penalty spot before the interval, but Liam Millar sealed the points for the visitors with 20 minutes to play.
“I think the guys did really well after the 1-0 to keep pushing, after the 2-0 to keep pushing and even after the third goal in a less structured way,” said Cifuentes.
“Since I’ve been here I have nothing to complain about the desire of the guys. They are always trying to do it.
“I have no doubt that this group is mentally strong, that we’ll get back [to winning games].
“Last season we had a trend of games without winning. I’m sure we’ll bounce back. Now it’s about getting the basics right and making sure we compete well against Derby because that’s an important game before the international break.”
