“The most important goal I’ve scored” – Woodyard delight as Wimbledon improve survival chances

Alex Woodyard labelled his winner for AFC Wimbledon in tonight’s 2-1 victory over Oxford United as “the most important goal I’ve ever scored”.

The Dons made it four wins on the bounce to keep them five points clear of the relegation zone with four matches remaining.

Woodyard’s goal was his first for the club since signing from Peterborough in the close season.

Speaking to AFC Wimbledon’s official website, Woodyard said: “I’m just so pleased we managed to get the three points.

“It’s great to get my first goal for the club but as long as we win, that’s the main thing. It’s a great three points. We knew it was a different test today and they [Oxford United] are a very good team.

“We conceded a soft goal, but Piggs [Joe Pigott] gets us back in the game with a penalty, and we pushed on after that. We showed great character. We’ve now won four on the bounce, which is unbelievable.

“[The goal I scored tonight] was probably the most important goal I’ve ever scored. I’ve been waiting to get a goal and I’m so pleased I got it tonight. It’s unbelievable what we’re doing at the moment.

“I’m so proud of the lads, I’m so proud of the staff and everyone [involved]. I’m just gutted that the fans aren’t with us at the moment. I hope we can carry it on.

“[When they scored their goal] it was all about keeping relaxed. We knew we had time. They are a good team – they’re going for the play-offs and their coach is a good manager. We showed great character to get back into the game and go on and win it.

“We didn’t have us much possession today and we didn’t show the football we have been playing in recent matches. But now we’ve shown we can win games in all different ways. That’s probably our best win because it was a great team and we showed character to get back into the game. For me that’s our best win.”
