Thomas Sandgaard addresses reports he has cut £140k of funding for Charlton Athletic’s academy

Thomas Sandgaard has responded to claims that he has reduced the spending on Charlton Athletic’s academy.

There had been a suggestion that the Addicks’ owner had cut £140,000 off the budget, including bringing down the number staff.

Sandgaard has described the figure mentioned as “not accurate”.

He told the South London Press: “We are looking at making the organisation more efficient and yes, we have spotted a few opportunities in the academy.

“As an example, when Anthony Hayes was promoted to the first team we did not directly replace him but rather restructured what looks like a better coaching structure for the U21s and U18s, and with some savings as a result.

“We have identified a few other areas like that and a few items in the budget that weren’t necessary. Just a few per cent of the overall expenses. I should also say that the many fantastic players that keep coming out of the academy are more a result of our catch-area and great coaching than a result of spending a lot of money.

“Also, because we make decisions throughout the season that could potentially make it go higher than last year’s expenses. Of course only if it makes sense and if we are smart about it we might end up spending less money.

“Let me also say that areas of improvement, travel expenses, physio’s etc have been identified by Steve Avory and Tom Pell, not dictated by me.”
