‘Threat’ Femi Azeez earns post-match plaudits as Millwall dump Leeds out of FA Cup
Alex Neil singled out Femi Azeez after the winger bagged both goals in Millwall’s impressive 2-0 win over Leeds in the FA Cup.
The Lions secured a place in the fifth round at the expense of the Championship table toppers courtesy of a goal in either half from Azeez, who also struck the crossbar in the first half.
Liam Roberts stepped up in the second half too, saving a Pascal Struijk penalty to preserve Millwall’s clean sheet.
Azeez has been missing since the Lions’ win over Dagenham and Redbridge in the third round. And Neil was full of praise for the former Reading man in his post-match interview on Millwall TV.
The Lions boss said: “[Azeez] can get the ball in deep areas and take us all the way up the pitch. He’s a threat.
“We want to get him as front-facing as we can as often as we can. I don’t think he’s a pocket player, which is how I used him when I first came in. I’m now trying to figure out his best traits and I think I can see that today.
“His finishing [was great]. The one that hit the bar and post, we were right behind it, I couldn’t believe it didn’t go in. He carried a huge threat throughout for us today.”
Millwall produced an assured first-half performance and were good value for their lead at the break before standing resolute after the break and scoring a fine goal on the transition.
Neil said: “We were excellent. From start to finish we did really well.
“The most pleasing part for me was how well we moved the ball at times in the game. The last thing I wanted to do was come here and set up to not get beat. We carried a threat.
“When we needed to defend, we’ve done it all season. We’re a great sort of block team that can defend the box really well and we did that.”
