Timo Werner put on spot-kick duties as Chelsea boss praises Jorginho’s attitude

BY PAUL LAGAN

Chelsea will be looking for a sixth clean sheet on the spin as they return to Premier League action at home against Sheffield United tomorrow.

The Blues comfortably disposed of Rennes on Wednesday night in the Champions league.

A brace of penalties from Timo Werner, pictured inset, saw off the French challenge with Tammy Abraham’s clinical finishing clinching the three points.

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard said: “I enjoyed it tonight. It shows the work we’re doing and the direction we’re going. We did the right things in every aspect – started well, got our goals, saw the game out well and had the chance to give others minutes later on.”

Lampard has told Jorginho that Werner is now Chelsea’s designated penalty taker. He added: “It wasn’t an easy decision because Jorginho has been pretty faultless for us. I had a conversation with Jorginho and his answer was perfect for a professional, in that he doesn’t care who takes them as long as we score.”

Kai Havertz will miss the match as he tested positive for Covid-19.

Chelsea Women defeated Spurs 2-0 in the Conti Cup on Tuesday.

They face Everton on Sunday as the WSL resumes after the international break. The Blues are still without Fran Kirby, who picked up an injury while on England duty.
