Tyreece Campbell has set himself a target of adding more goal contributions next season after committing his future to Charlton Athletic until at least 2026.

The winger, 20, had been due to be out of contract this summer.

But the Addicks have agreed new terms with Campbell, who joined their academy at U9 level, with the option of an extra 12 months.

The youngster has made 71 senior outings for the League One club and 40 of those came in the campaign just completed.

“It feels good to be here for longer,” Campbell told the South London Press. “It is another chance to show people how good I am.

“It was always my first choice to stay here. I’m comfortable here and everything is nice, like a family.

“Everyone is excited by the future and we all have the same goals and plans for next season, so it should be a good one.”

Campbell scored four goals and collected seven assists last season.

He had a run of three matches in October where he picked up assists.

His minutes were more a struggle after early January with Nathan Jones, appointed at the start of February, opting for a wing-back system.

“I want to get more goal involvements than I did last season,” said Campbell, when asked about his personal aspirations. “I want to have more impact on the team and stay in the team longer – become a key player for them.

“I’ve been developing well and I feel like I’ve been getting better. Hopefully next season under Nathan, our gaffer, he can help improve my game and take me to the next level. Everyone in the team and all the coaching staff have a lot of time for me. They are always speaking to me and giving advice.

“It wasn’t the season that the team wanted but the end we had, going unbeaten so long, shows the potential we have. Hopefully we turn some of those draws into wins next season and see where we can get to.”

Campbell is the latest Charlton Athletic prospect to be tied down.

Karoy Anderson, Daniel Kanu, Nathan Asiimwe, Micah Mbick and Ibrahim Fullah have all signed professional deals since the start of the 2023-24 season.

Jones, asked about retaining the services of Campbell, told our paper: “We fought really hard. We don’t want to lose any good players but especially young ones – because Charlton has a real history of producing them.

“At times you have to let them go if they go quicker than you, for example, but Tyreece, Nathan, Karoy and Danny are around our first team and they are nowhere near the ceiling they need to be.

“Now if they get there really quickly – quicker than us – then we’re in a good position because we’ve either got a fantastic footballer on our hands or an asset that can generate something. We want to make sure they are all under contract for long periods of time so we can have that work with them.

“Hopefully they will progress and Karoy Anderson and Daniel Kanu will be at Charlton for a hell of a long time – which means that we’ll have been successful.”

Campbell, born in Southwark, made his first-team debut against Oxford in February 2022.

Addicks technical director Andy Scott said: “It is a feather in our cap we’ve been able to keep a young player who is going to be wanted by a lot of clubs. He recognises this is a place that he will continue to develop and really have an impact in the side.

“Nathan has identified him as a player with high potential. He’s got a lot of characteristics that Nathan likes in a player that he can develop.

“We’re not playing with wingers at the moment but he has played as a number 10, as a striker and as a wing-back. His attributes and physicality give him a lot of options and technically he is really good.

“One-v-one he is a really good player. He needs a lot more direction – which Nathan will give him. This contract will enable us to spend time with him and pre-season will be a big time for him to understand what his role in the team will be.

“We want to keep our young players and we’ve had a number of discussions with his agent, this has been going on since October of last year. From their point of view they wanted to know how he fitted in the team and what the club was going to be doing.

“We’re really happy that we’ve got him and he’s really pleased that he has got direction of how he can improve his game. We’ve all got to work hard to make sure we get the best out of him.

“We’ve signed Dan Kanu, Nathan Asiimwe, Karoy Anderson, Tyreece Campbell, Thierry Small, Kayne Ramsay is 23 – young players – Conor Coventry.

“We are building a really good squad of players who have got games under their belt but are still very young, with a coach who likes to work with players on the pitch. We’ve got an individual development coach who is working with all these players as well as our promising players in the academy and we believe we can improve them.”
