‘Unlucky’ – Patrick Vieira’s verdict after Brentford score late equaliser to deny Crystal Palace their first Premier League win of 2023

Crystal Palace boss Patrick Vieira said his side are a little bit “unlucky” at the moment after Vitaly Janelt equalised late on in their 1-1 draw with Brentford.

Eberechi Eze opened the scoring for the Eagles in the 68th minute after he met Michael Olise’s pinpoint cross to head past David Raya.

The Bees equalised with the last kick of the game after Vitaly Janelt was left unmarked inside the area and headed Bryan Mbeumo’s cross beyond Vicente Guaita.

Thomas Frank’s west Londoners had more possession, but both sides registered four shots on target.

Palace have still not picked up a win in the Premier League this calendar year.

“When you look at the game overall, both teams didn’t create very many chances,” said Vieira.

“When you score that first goal and defend the way we did today, you expect to take those three points.

“But we knew that any time they had a chance to put the ball in the box, it was always going to be a danger.

“We managed those situations really well until the last minute of the game. In a lot of games that we played lately, what we’re missing is those three points.

“The performances and organisation were good, but at the end, we’re missing something that allows us to take those three points.

“We had situations where we didn’t make the right decision in the offensive transition. At the moment, we are a little bit unlucky I would say.

“But it’s important for us to keep our heads up, keep working, and to try to turn things around.”
