Waiting game for Millwall as Gary Rowett provides update on Leeds loanee Charlie Cresswell’s eye injury

Millwall are still waiting to discover the full extent of Charlie Cresswell’s eye injury.

The Leeds United centre-back came off in stoppage time on Saturday. England U21 international Cresswell suffered a fractured eye socket in an aerial challenge from West Brom forward Daryl Dike.

Cresswell’s form had seen him retain his first-team starting spot since club captain Shaun Hutchinson returned to full fitness.

But he looks likely to miss Friday’s home game against Luton Town and Monday’s trip to Hull City.

Cresswell’s initial scan on his injury was organised by his parent club.

“He went to see a specialist and it was too swollen for them to be definitive,” Rowett told the South London Press. “We’re waiting on a prognosis for what the next step is.

“I presume the next step is either an operation, which wouldn’t be good in terms of coming back (to finish off the season), or possibly wear a mask.

“We’re waiting on that next stage until we know where we are.

“It’s quite a nasty injury and, particularly as a young player, we have got to follow whatever Leeds think is the right thing to do with Cressy. We’ll support that.”

Cresswell also suffered major facial damage after being kicked in the face by Hull City’s Oscar Estupinan at The Den.

Millwall right-back Danny McNamara said: “It shows you the character he is, he’ll stick his head in anywhere.

“Cressy has been class, since he has come on. Every game he plays he seems to be developing and he is growing into a man. It’s a joy to play alongside him.

“Hopefully he has a speedy recovery and can get back as soon as possible.”
