‘We encourage him to do that’ – Charlton boss Nathan Jones on attacking qualities of skipper Greg Docherty

Nathan Jones has talked about Greg Docherty’s first goal for Charlton Athletic and how he knew the summer signing from Hull City could play a more advanced midfield role.

The Scot opened his account for the South Londoners in Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Bolton Wanderers, rifling a superb shot home from the edge of the box.

Docherty also produced finishes like that for the Tigers and told our paper earlier this month that being utilised in a more attacking role was a key attraction to signing for Charlton on a free transfer.

Asked about that at the weekend, Jones said: “Well I’ve got people inside the club who don’t think he can play as an eight – it’s lucky I make my own decisions!

“He has energy and he has aggression. Technically he is a good player. And we encourage him to do that.

“It’s amazing when you believe in someone or something – we do that with all our players, in terms of what can be achieved.

“I’m a big believer in that if you believe it and it is process – you work hard enough – you can achieve anything.”
