‘We fear no-one in League One – Charlton boss Jones on 2-1 victory over Wycombe Wanderers
Nathan Jones saw plenty to like in his Charlton Athletic side as they ended Wycombe Wanderers’ 19-game unbeaten run in League One.
Miles Leaburn scored twice early in the second half for the Addicks with Richard Kone cutting the deficit in the closing stages.
But Charlton held on to secure the three points and make it a hat-trick of league victories to sign off 2024.
The South Londoners have defeated Birmingham, Wycombe and Bolton Wanderers in SE7 this season as well as drawing 2-2 with Wrexham.
“It was a really good performance, from start to finish,” said Charlton boss Jones.
“These (Wycombe) are the top scorers in the league, a really dangerous side, but we limited them to very little.
“We had most, if not all, of the big chances. We were well worth our victory. These are a very good side, they haven’t lost since August, they are very well-coached and know what they are doing. We knew we had to be at our best today and we were.
“I know how we build – how defensively secure and sound we are. That gives us an opportunity to keep winning games, because before I came in here we weren’t winning games. With the talent we have got – if they follow the gameplan and are bold – then we know we can score goals against any team in the league. Ironically we’ve been superb and outstanding against all the top side in the league.
“Today I am really proud of them. They have had to take some flak and show some character, but they have come through that. We’re unbeaten in five, three clean sheets in that – only conceded two goals. There are a lot of stats there. You’re quick enough to give me stats of one win in nine and all that malarkey – but we have come through that tough spell.
“I keep saying that this is a tough place to play, at times. You come here because the expectation is we were Premier League and should be Premier League – all the history that comes with this wonderful football club – and sometimes that is a lot to live up to. We are a work in progress trying to do that.
“We’re a good side – there is a really good side in there. We’ve just got to add that consistency because if we lose a game we usually lose it by one goal. It’s usually tight and we have missed chances – so it can go either way. You don’t see us getting beaten by three or four – or someone cruising the game 2-0. It doesn’t happen to us.
“There is a really good nucleus of a football team in here. At times we don’t do everything I’d like us to. But there is an honest, good, solid footballing team in there. If they just believe, keep working hard and are bold then there is a fantastic footballing side in there.
“We fear no-one.You saw that today. We went after the highest scoring team in the league today and got our just deserts.”
