‘We showed real character’ – Palace defender on fightback at Southampton

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi hailed the significance of his side turning around a run of four games without a win after a 2-1 victory at Southampton on Saturday.

“It’s extremely important and puts the team in a good place,” said the former Cray Wanderers player to the South London Press about the victory which puts the Eagles back in contention for a top 10 Premier League finish.

“We want to set a benchmark for the season. Hopefully we can carry on now until the end of the season and finish as high as possible.”

The result was the first time the Eagles have come from behind in the league this season to win and followed a first half where they failed to convert their chances and possession.

But an improved second-half showing led to strikes from Eberechi Eze and Wilfried Zaha, who came off the bench, to seal the three points.

“We didn’t start the first half as well as possible and I can take responsibility for that myself,” said Guehi. “I didn’t start off as best. I’m not too sure [why], sometimes it happens like that but it’s a good response from the team. It was just about making sure that we chose the right pass and we ended up winning the game. We showed real character.

“Ebs has had a tough season with injuries and getting back to fitness and I’m just really happy for him and, especially with Wilf coming on and making an instant impact, it’s great for the team.”

Guehi also praised the travelling fans from SE25 who in recent weeks have also travelled midweek to Newcastle.

“I’d say we’ve got the best support in the league,” said Guehi. “Everywhere we go, that’s where they go. We’re grateful to have them and really appreciate their support.”
