‘We try and do our business in the correct manner’ – Millwall boss Gary Rowett on summer transfer window activity

Gary Rowett is keeping a lid on Millwall’s transfer window moves as a mark of respect to clubs they are looking to trade with.

The Lions recently saw a bid for Blackburn midfielder Lewis Travis, 25, rebuffed.

Millwall are determined to bolster their options in the middle of the park and are understood to have targets domestically and abroad.

Travis, a former Liverpool youngster who was converted from a centre-back by ex-Rovers boss Tony Mowbray, has made more than 200 first-team appearances.

“When you’re trying to strengthen a team that has challenged at the right end of the Championship for a while now then of course bids are going to be going in,” Lions boss Rowett told the South London Press. “Of course there are going to be meetings, opportunities and attempts to do signings.

“What we’ve tried to do is not really share that publicly. I don’t think it is fair to do that. When you are also talking, sometimes, about other team’s players then it is not necessarily respectful. We always try to do our business in the right way, which means very much under the radar.

“We are working very hard.

“What you want to do and what you are able to do – timeframe-wise – are always two very different things in this window.

“Everybody has the aim to get all their players in before they come back for pre-season but the reality is that no-one ever does that.

“I’ll let other people speculate and write stories on what they think we’re trying to do.”

The bulk of Millwall’s players report back for pre-season testing on Wednesday before a training camp in Alicante, Spain.

Their first friendly is at Gillingham, managed by ex-Lion Neil Harris, on July 15 (1pm) and they host Charlton on July 25 (7.45pm).

“From experience no-one is in a massive rush (on deals) before pre-season dates start to loom,” said Rowett. “Usually then managers start to get a little bit edgy and want the players in quickly – I’m no different.

“I don’t think there has been loads that has been done so far by other clubs. That probably backs up what I’m saying.”
