‘We upped the tempo’ – AFC Wimbledon continue perfect Plough Lane League Two start with Morecambe win
Johnnie Jackson praised his AFC Wimbledon side’s second-half performance in their 3-0 win over Morecambe on Tuesday night.
Matty Stevens should have given Wimbledon the lead in the 28th minute when Myles Hippolyte swung a lovely cross around the Morecambe defence and right in front of the striker to attack.
The ex-Forest Green forward failed to get enough power behind his effort and headed straight at Stuart Moore.
Stevens and James Tilley both had chances again before half-time to find an opener but were unable to find a way past Moore.
The Dons eventually took the lead in the 52nd minute when James Tilley’s rasping right-footed shot from distance flew beyond the Morecambe keeper and into the top right-hand corner.
Wimbledon doubled their lead in the 66th minute when the ball fell to Omar Bugiel from a Callum Maycock pass inside the area, and he finished beyond a crowd of bodies.
Stevens finally got his name on the scoresheet and added a third in the 70th minute after he tapped home Josh Neufville’s low cross.
“We played well tonight, and we were pretty relentless in what we did,” said the Dons boss.
“The first half was a little bit slow, but we still had some chances to score.
“We upped the tempo in the second half. We scored some really good goals and created an abundance of chances.
“We could have won the game by more – that will be my only gripe.
“We got a clean sheet as well, so it’s a good night.”
Wimbledon have had a flawless start to their League Two campaign at home, winning five, scoring 15 goals and only conceding twice.
Jackson added: “We want to be relentless and not let teams off the hook when we’ve got them.
“Tonight, you saw that at 1-0 – we took the game away from them.
“We’re scoring bundles and creating bundles. It’s resulting in good performances, results and points.
“We need to keep that going.”
