‘Well beaten’ – Crystal Palace boss on Man United cup exit and provides Dean Henderson injury update

Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson his side were “well beaten” by Manchester United in their 3-0 EFL Cup third round defeat at Old Trafford on Tuesday evening.

The Eagles went behind in the 21st minute when Alejandro Garnacho arrived on to a Diogo Dalot cross along the face of goal and steered a shot beyond substitute goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.

United quickly doubled their lead when Casemiro met a Mason Mount corner six minutes later and headed past former Red Devils keeper Johnstone.

Erik ten Hag’s side booked their place in the next round when Brazilian midfielder Casemiro whipped a cross to the back post for French forward Anthony Martial to score.

Palace only managed two shots on target during the 90 minutes, both through Jean-Philippe Mateta.

“We were well beaten,” said Hodgson.

“I thought they attacked better than we did. They defended the few attacks we were able to mount quite comfortably. And as a result, you tend to unfortunately be looking at one possible result.

“This wasn’t a weak team by any stretch of the imagination. We’re not suddenly going to go from the team you saw tonight to a totally different team [on Saturday against United in the Premier League].

“We’re going to have to become a totally different team in terms of how we approach the game.”

Dean Henderson – on his first start of the club since joining from Manchester United in the summer – was forced off in the 19th minute due to injury.

“Not really,” said Hodgson when asked if he could provide an update on the stopper’s injury.

“Like all of those muscle injuries, the doctors can tell you which part of the leg the injury has occurred in but they’re not prepared to give you the severity of it.

“That will need a scan. I’m sure we will have to wait for the result of that before we know anything more.

“We just know he had a very unfortunate end to a game he was looking forward to playing.”
