‘We’ll only have ourselves to blame if we don’t pick up wins in next four games’ – Lions boss Rowett rues lack of finishing touch at Hull

Millwall manager Gary Rowett wants his players to take the positives from their display at Hull City today – and has added they will only have themselves to blame if they do not pick up wins in their next four games to seal a Championship play-off place.

The Lions had 22 attempts, six on target, but Adama Traore’s whipped finish from the edge of the box settled the contest.

Millwall have not scored in their last four matches.

Next up is seventh-placed Preston North End in SE16 on Saturday followed by a home game the following midweek against Birmingham City.

“We have got to dust ourselves off and take the positives from the performance because there were lots and lots,” Rowett told BBC Radio London. “We need to move on to four games where if we don’t get wins in those games then we have only got ourselves to blame.

“The players are going to be disappointed and we’re disappointed because we walk away losing the game. At this stage you can’t afford to lose many in the position we’re in and trying to fight for the position we’re in.

“I was really pleased with the performance but disappointed with the result. I didn’t like the goal we conceded. I thought it was a little bit of a soft goal from a long way out – we can close down quicker.

“After that we have got to take our chances. And that is why strikers usually get the most money and that’s why, as we saw in January, strikers are hard to find. That’s the difference between getting in the top six and not getting in the top six. We got into some brilliant areas but that last little bit of composure or quality wins us the game comfortably.”

  • Having “Ourselves to blame” is just not an acceptable way of brushing this defeat aside. Losing to Huddersfield and Hull are disgraceful results – as is not scoring in the last 4 games at this end of the season.
Ask anyone – no ask EVERYONE on the terraces – our forward line just is not good enough and has not been all season – that is why we are now struggling at this final hurdle.
The managers negative approach – “dont lose” – rather than “must win” is also at the heart of our problem.
Yes we have managed to perform above our capability (we have almost made a silk purse out of a sows ear) but this approach will probably cost us
