Welling and Eastbourne Borough produce gritty draw that is low on entertainment
Excitement was at a premium as Welling United and Eastbourne Borough played out a goal-less draw with little goalmouth action.
Mark Goldberg made four changes to his Welling team after their poor performance at Concord Rangers in their previous match.
Adam Coombes and Gavin McCallum were left out of the starting 11, Bradley Goldberg sat the game out with an injury, and Sanchez Ming started a six-match ban for an incident at his previous club Dulwich Hamlet of which Welling knew nothing when signing him.
Greg Luer had the first goal effort for the visitors but his shot lacked power and Dan Wilks saved comfortably. That set the tone for the rest of the game.
Luke Rooney had a shot deflected wide for Wellling then from Anthony Cook’s corner, Nathan Green headed wide.
Joe Anderson had a low shot saved by Tom Hadler and Cook fired a free kick wide of the post.
At the other end Luer messed up a header from James Ferry’s cross before Rob Swaine headed over from Cook’s corner for Welling.
Wilks clung on well to Romain’s low cross shot before Swaine was again off target with a header from an Aaron Cosgrave cross.
Josh Oyinsan had a shot deflected over before Roberto Noiti sliced wide of his own net.
Having finished the half the stronger, Welling hoped to build on it in the second half but a succession of poor passes and bad decisions combined to limit their opportunities.
Elliott Romain shot wide for the Sports before Hadler almost gifted Welling a goal. He raced out wide to clear but only found Green forty yards out. He aimed for the far post as Hadler dived across his goal but it went just the wrong side of the post.
Kane Wills put in a cross from which Ferry failed to hit the target then Charlie Walker missed from close range.
As the game came to a close Walker had a shot well saved by Wilks at the near post before Welling had one last chance in injury time when Ejiro Okosieme’s shot went wide when a touch would have diverted it home.
