Welling United fail to spark in stalemate against Slough Town
BY MARK DOIG
In a game of few chances, Welling United arrested their two-match run of heavy midweek defeats with a goal-less draw against Slough Town in the National League South.
Having conceded four and then five in their two previous evening games, Wings manager Warren Feeney will have been pleased that his team recorded a clean sheet. However Slough offered little in attack, other than looking for scraps from Guy Hollis long throws.
Feeney reverted to using two centre-backs with former Millwall player Sid Nelson partnering Jamie Sendles-White, allowing Sam Cox and Chi Ezennolim to revert to full-back rather than wing-back. Despite that, the two wide defensive players still spent more time in the opposition half, especially in the second period.
George Wells had an early opportunity for the visitors when his shot was blocked wide before Stefan Payne had an opening for Welling. A defender lost his footing to allow the Wings striker a run on goal and he forced a good low save out of Rhys Forster at the expense of a corner.
As the closure of an uneventful first half approached, Ben Harris charged down a Kai McKenzie-Lyle clearance, but it ballooned up into the air and the Welling goalkeeper was able to get under it and catch it.
After the interval, Payne sent Devonte Aransibia away down the left and Forster was again called into action to make an excellent low diving save before Ade Azeez diverted a Yaser Kasim cross on to the post with Forster rooted to the spot.
Although Welling were camped in the Rebels’ half, they struggled to create further chances with Payne and Manny Parry, who had replaced the injured Nelson, unable to find the target.
Taylor Maloney hit a shot straight at Forster before Slough caught Welling on the break and George Hunt pulled it back for Arnold Matshazi who should have done better than shooting over.
Kasim cut in but shot across the face of goal and Welling had one more opportunity in the last minute of stoppage time when Payne struck a free-kick too straight and Forster was able to claim.
Welling are next in action on Saturday when they visit Concord Rangers.
