Welling United into next round of FA Cup – but Chesham United prove a challenge

BY MARK DOIG

Welling United were pushed all the way by Chesham United on Saturday but won 2-1 to progress to the third qualifying round of the FA Cup.

Although Chesham are not enjoying the best of seasons in the Evo-Stik League South they put up a stiff challenge.

Had Dave Pearce’s cross been a few inches lower then Ryan Blake might have headed home in the opening moments. They came even closer when Lewis Rolfe slung in a cross towards the far post and Darren Locke’s header looped onto the crossbar and over.

Jefferson Louis was a real handful and twice fired over.

Welling’s Nassim L’Ghoul had a shot comfortably saved as the hosts struggled to get any attacking tempo.

Chesham went ahead with half an hour on the clock. Bradley Clayton took advantage of Welling’s failure to move the ball quickly and nicked it in their half to send Louis away. He brushed off a couple of challenges before firing into the bottom corner.

The Generals were only able to hold on to their lead for five minutes. L’Ghoul went on one of his surges and although he was tackled it came out to Gavin McCallum who made tracks down the left wing. He pulled back for Jack Jebb to pass beyond Alex Tokarczyk in the Chesham goal.
Gavin McCallum scored the winner
Welling had three more chances in the final 10 minutes of the first half. McCallum drew a good save from Tokarczyk, Craig Braham-Barrett tested him at the near post before L’Ghoul hit a shot that the goalkeeper turned away at the cost of a corner.

Tokarczyk made a miraculous point-blank save from a Danny Mills header.

Jebb’s corner was headed over by Mills and it started to look as it it wasn’t going to happen for the Wings.

Manager Steve King and the referee have words outside the dugout
Welling kept probing and finally got their reward. Jebb slung in one of his trademark free-kick deliveries and McCallum left his marker in his wake to power a ferocious header home.

Jebb had a shot saved then Mills had a header claimed easily as Welling saw out the game without further alarm.
