Welling United show no mercy as they crush Chipstead in FA Cup
There was no mercy shown as Welling United inflicted a 7-0 crushing of Chipstead.
Whilst there were shocks galore elsewhere in the F.A. Cup second qualifying round, Welling researched their opposition and played their strongest team to ensure that they do not fall victim of a giant killing.
They came out all guns blazing and.might have scored in the opening minute but Adam Coomes’ header from Joe Anderson’s cross thudded back off the post. Thee minutes later, Welling went ahead. Coombes showed his predatory instincts when collecting Gavin McCallum’s pass and firing home.
Tom Collins had a good chance to level but headed wide following multiple step-overs by former Wing Malachi Hudson but Welling were soon back on the attack. Anthony Cook crossed but Coombes missed the target with a header before being thwarted by a last gasp block by Josh Gallagher.
Ejiro Okosieme headed over then Oliver Pain saved from Goldberg before Welling went two up. Danny Waldren escaped his marker to celebrate his second Welling debut with a stooping close range header from Cook’s corner.
Coombes headed wide from another Cook corner before he put Welling further ahead. Theo Widdrington tried a shot but it went straight to Coombes. He controlled it before firing home.
Cook had a shot saved comfortably by Pain before firing a free kick well off target just before the break.
At the interval, Chipstead manager Rob Kember made a double change but Welling added a fourth before they had a chance to make a difference. Pain’s punched clearance from a Waldren’s deep cross had no power and Cook volleyed home from ten yards.
Hudson’s low drive flew just wide of the post for Chpstead before Rob Swaine was off target with a header from a Cook corner.
Callum Hart had a shot blocked by Okosieme before Chipstead, temporarily down to ten men as Aaron Miller was being patched up, conceded again. Joshua Oyinsan was hauled down inside the penalty area and Goldberg sent Pain the wrong way from the spot.
Oyinsan had a shot saved before two Welling substitutes combined to set up a sixth goal. Jack Jebb twisted and turned to make space for Aaron Cosgrave and he sent Goldberg away and to slot home.
Jebb made it seven with a trade mark free kick over the wall to round off a convincing Welling victory.
