Welling United take Ebbsfleet striker Mills on loan as Coombes sold to Billericay

Ebbsfleet United striker Danny Mills has joined Welling United on a season-long loan.

The Wings have sold Adam Coombes to National South rivals Billericay Town.

It means new manager Steve King has seen plenty of player movement – with 14 of their 17-man squad new additions.

Mills made his name at Whitehawk under King, scoring 60 goals in two seasons to land his switch to Ebbsfleet.

King has also signed midfielders David Ijaha and Arnaud Mendy, the latter a full international for Guinea-Bissou. 

Mills was quickly into the action in Saturday’s 3-1 friendly win over Watford U23s – his diving header from a Jack Jebb corner flew just over.

Watford’s Michael Folivi fired over from just inside the penalty area.

Alex Jakubiak then burst through but Dan Wilks closed the angle and blocked the shot with his legs.

Mills had a header tipped over from captain Craig Braham-Barrett’s cross.

Wilks was again out quickly to block from Randell Williams before Welling went ahead. Mills pressurised Joy Mukena into erring on the edge of his own area and having nicked it away, the new boy was able to poke beyond goalkeeper Sam Howes.

Watford levelled four minutes later when Jakubiak tucked a curler inside the far post.

The Hornets might have gone ahead before the break but Williams side-footed wide then Folivi headed over from a deep cross.

Williams almost sliced a Jebb corner into his own goal in the second half before Welling regained the lead. Mills was again involved – playing in an unnamed trialist to finish clinically.

Substitute Nassim L’Ghoul immediately created problems and set up the third goal. His powerful run ended when he fired across the six yard box for fellow substitute Nathaniel Pinney to slot home.

Howes was called on to make two good late saves as L’Ghoul ran riot and Welling ran out comfortable winners.
