Wes Fofana a selection doubt – defender’s injury the only negative in Chelsea’s Champions League win

Wesley Fofana is a doubt for Chelsea this weekend for their home game against Wolves after coming off early during Wednesday night’s 3-0 Champions League win against A.C. Milan.

The £70million summer signing from Leicester City was replaced by Trevoh Chalobah in the 38th minute at Stamford Bridge with a knee injury.

France U21 international Fofana, who opened the scoring in Chelsea’s Group E match against the Rossoneri with his first goal for the club in the 24th minute, missed the majority of the 2021-22 season with a fractured right fibula.

Wolves could still be without a manager for the game on Saturday after they sacked Bruno Lage following the 2-0 defeat to West Ham last weekend.

Fofana was pictured leaving the stadium on crutches on Tuesday evening.

“We don’t know yet – that’s the one disappointing thing about the evening. We will have a scan tomorrow – fingers crossed,” said Potter of the initial reaction to the 21-year-old’s injury.

“I wouldn’t want to speculate on it now, but we’re concerned and hope for the best.

“He’s a young guy – a strong guy. We’ll help and support him but not too much to report.”

Goals from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Reece James wrapped up Potter’s first Champions League win as Blues boss.

“I’m delighted with the performance and the attitude against a top opponent,” added Potter.

“We had to play well – we had to act well. A clean sheet, three goals, and we had to suffer as well, which is good to do as you have to do that at the top of the game.

“I’m really pleased for the players. They have worked really hard this week and it’s a good start for us.

“Reece is just a fantastic player. He is developing all the time – he’ll get better and better as we go along.

“I have really enjoyed working with him – he has got a lot to offer. He can play any game in the world – he’s tremendous.

“My job is to try and help him reach his potential. His potential is beyond the sky.”

Potter, who won his first Premier League game in charge of Chelsea last weekend after they beat Crystal Palace 2-1 at Selhurst Park, is unbeaten so far since taking over from Thomas Tuchel.

“We have been working hard, it’s as simple as that,” admitted Potter.

“I have been really pleased with how open, honest and responsible they are. I knew that the level had dropped a little bit, and when you do that at this level, you can be punished.

“It’s a credit to the players that they have tried to take on the things we have spoken about.

“It’s just the start for us today.”
