What does Ben Garner make of challenge points-per-game target needed for top six?

Charlton Athletic manager Ben Garner remains confident their lowly League One standing can quickly change by putting a run of victories together.

Wycombe finished sixth in the table last season with 83 points.

And the average for the last five campaigns to take a play-off place works out at 74.8.

It means the Addicks need to average 1.82 points per game, pretty much top-two form.

Charlton have taken nine points from their last 10 matches. Saturday’s 0-0 at Lincoln City was their seventh draw of the league campaign.

“Season on season the numbers tend to be pretty similar,” Garner told the South London Press, when asked about the potential average that his side could require. “We just need to get on a run and win some games.

“That can quickly become achievable.

“In League One, League Two and the Championship if you win three on the bounce then you’re probably going up eight league places. It can very quickly change.

“We don’t need to look beyond tomorrow night. We need to focus purely on Exeter City and purely on getting the win that we want. Once we do that we can look to take the next step forward.”

Charlton have only scored more than once in two of their league matches this season.

“Every team will look to try and stop us scoring and try and frustrate us,” said Garner. “We’ve had several games this season where teams have changed shape to play against us. Lincoln being on, on Saturday. They watch us play at Barnsley and that’s the reason they were thinking about going to a back five.

“I’m surprised we haven’t scored more. We should’ve done. We’ve created enough opportunities and we’re getting into situations. We just haven’t taken enough of them. The quality is there and the intent is there, I see it week in and week out. It’s that confidence again. If goals are going in, confidence grows and if you’re winning games then confidence grows.

“This is a period where I’m learning a lot – about the team, the group and myself. We will come through this. We are closer as a group, for sure, for going through this period. Once we get the confidence, which we have to create ourselves – build and develop – then we’ll be in a much better place.”

Garner hasn’t got much of a clue has he? Same old “we should have scored more” drivel. Yep scoring goals is the key. Not giving them away at the other end helps too. Team doesn’t need anyone to tell them that. With his recent bleating about budgets and signings Garner’s P45 can’t be too far away.
