Wigan 2 AFC Wimbledon 3 – Joe Pigott at double as Dons win for first time since December 2

BY DAVE HUNT-JACKSON

Jack Rudoni’s first league goal and two from Joe Pigott earned AFC Wimbledon a first win of the year in a nervy encounter against fellow strugglers Wigan.

The Dons began the brighter with a number of early half-chances and a foul on Ethan Chislett in the area went unpunished, before they took a deserved lead on 23 minutes when Rudoni bundled home after fine work from Nester Guinness-Walker.

Chislett should have doubled the lead as he skipped past Tom Pierce only to see his effort come back of the underside of the crossbar.

The second wasn’t long in coming as new dad Will Nightingale fed Pigott and the visitors’ top scorer doubled their lead.

That should have been that for the first-half but in injury time Sam Walker flapped at a corner and Curtis Tilt capitalised to give the Latics hope at the interval.

The needless goal meant that the momentum was with Wigan at the start of the second half and they were level as Wimbledon failed to clear a cross and Jamie Proctor fired home.

Brilliant work from Rudoni to keep the ball in and backheel it to Chislett led to a foul by Wigan keeper Jamie Jones, who was then beaten from the resulting spot-kick as Pigott put the Dons back in front.

They survived a late barrage from their hosts during seven minutes of injury time before finally securing their first win since December 2.
