Wigan boss Paul Cook: You have to give credit to Millwall for that display

BY RICHARD CAWLEY

Wigan manager Paul Cook admitted it would have been harsh on Millwall if they had emerged pointless from Tuesday night’s Den clash.

Josh Windass missed a penalty to make it 2-0 to the Latics and the hosts found an almost instant response as Shaun Williams converted the second spot-kick of the evening.

Steve Morison sidefooted home a winner for the Lions.

“We scored totally against the run of play,” said Cook. “Millwall were the better side, they were excellent first half. So to go in 1-0 up at half-time was a big plus for us.

“In the second half James Vaughan had a good chance with the keeper. The penalty was a massive turning point, because if we go 2-0 up the whole atmosphere in the stadium would have changed.

“Minutes later it is a Millwall penalty, it’s 1-1 and they are in the ascendency.

“Millwall deserved something out of the game, for sure. If we’d have gone 2-0 up it would’ve been very unjust on them.

“You have to pat Millwall on the back and say well done.”

Reece James was penalised for climbing over Aiden O’Brien inside the area as Williams produced a flawless spot-kick.

“Reece has made the referee be able to make a decision,” said Cook. “I thought it was a very soft penalty for Millwall. The lad has gone down very, very easily.

“The ref has just given one the other end and it is very easy for him to give that one, you can understand it.”
