Wimbledon missing several key men but still secure draw at Surbiton

Wimbledon were seriously depleted by international call-ups, injuries and other commitments as they claimed a 2-2 draw at Surbiton in the Men’s Hockey League Premier Division.

The Dons started fast and some slick first-time passing led to an unerring finish by Simon Mantell from close range.

Surbiton hit back to lead by the half-hour mark with two short corner conversions.

Wimbledon equalised on 53 minutes, Ed Horler slotting home a short corner into the bottom left corner.

The South London club’s reduced options saw Peter Small and George Waller, who have come through the Wimbledon junior section, play their part. There was also a first outing for new boy Johnny Codling.

Wimbledon are sixth in the 10-club league and their weekend result lifted them above Holcombe on goal difference.
