Women’s football: Charlton made to pay for spurned chances as Coventry United snatch draw

Helen Dermody’s scrappy late goal saw Coventry United snatch a dramatic draw and deny Charlton their first win of the FA Women’s Championship season.

A scintillating display from Charley Clifford – which included an early goal – had looked set to give the Addicks a vital three points.

But substitute Dermody popped up two minutes from time to poke home from close range.

Charlton have six draws and three losses from their nine  Championship games. Riteesh Mishra’s side are 10th in the table, only kept off the bottom because Leicester City have a worse goal difference.

Clifford opened the scoring on eight minutes at Oakwood when Rachel Newborough’s cutback deflected into her path and she powered in a shot from just outside the area.

The midfielder could easily have doubled her tally before half time but fired one chance wide of the target and hit the bar with a 25-yard piledriver, with Lois Heuchan blazing the rebound over.

The Addicks should have doubled their lead when Charlie Devlin rounded the keeper but saw her shot cut out by Nikki Miles, while the irrepressible Clifford had another shot well saved by Sue Wood.

They were made to pay when Dermody scrambled in from close range to break Charlton hearts.

The Addicks head to Lewes Women on Sunday.

Crystal Palace host Durham Women.
