Women’s football round-up: Charlton open with draw against Lewes but Palace slip to late defeat at Durham

Charlton Athletic Women started their FA Women’s Championship campaign with 0-0 draw at home to Lewes on Sunday.

Charley Boswell and Jess King both hit the crossbar for the Rooks. The Addicks could have pinched all three points late on, but an unmarked Charlie Estcourt blazed over from six yards.

Charlton keeper Katie Startup pulled off a remarkable save low to her right to deny Emma Jones’ close-range effort in the 82nd minute.

Addicks captain Grace Coombs said: “Charlie Devlin has come in [from Manchester United] and you could see they could not handle her at all. If we can get her in the right positions and if we have other midfielders who can push on then the goals will come from all around this year.”

Crystal Palace lost 2-1 at Durham with Sarah Robson grabbing a last-minute winner.

Ashleigh Goddard had put the Eagles into a ninth-minute lead.

Crystal Palace striker Magda Mosengo said: “It’s a hard pill to swallow. I don’t think we deserved the loss there but all the girls worked hard. We’re a resilient team and we’ll look to bounce back next week.”
