Women’s football round-up: Chelsea return to Super League summit after defeating Leicester

Chelsea Women returned to the top of the Super League after a 4-0 victory at Leicester City on Sunday afternoon.

Nathalie Bjorn opened the scoring for the Blues in the 38th minute when Leicester failed to clear their lines from a corner and she hooked a shot over keeper Lize Kop and into the net.

Mayra Ramírez doubled the advantage six minutes later when she won possession in her own half and sprinted up the other end to round the Foxes stopper to score.

Johanna Rytting Kaneryd added a third in the 66th minute with a left-footed shot before Catarina Macario, who haD been sidelined for the past 20 months with an ACL injury, scored on her Chelsea debut.

The Blues are level on points with Manchester City, who beat Everton 2-1 over the weekend.

Macario joined from Lyon in June 2022 but picked up the serious injury instantly.

“She hasn’t played football for more than 600 days,” said Chelsea boss Emma Hayes. “She is a super footballer and just what we need coming into the run-in. She has to get more match-fit, but she played her part.

Crystal Palace, Charlton and Millwall all had their games postponed at the weekend due to waterlogged pitches.
