Women’s football round-up: Palace fall to bottom of WSL as Millwall suffer cup defeat at The Den
Crystal Palace suffered a late stoppage-time defeat at Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon as they dropped to the bottom of the Women’s Super League.
The Eagles took the lead at Villa Park through summer signing My Cato but the hosts went 2-1 up before half-time through goals from Anna Patten and Rachel Daly.
Laura Kaminski’s side looked set to pick up a point when Annabel Blanchard volleyed past Sabrina D’Angelo with four minutes of normal time remaining.
However, Ebony Salmon smashed an effort from the edge of the box into the top right-hand corner of Shae Yanez’s goal in the 94th minute to seal all three points for Villa.
The South Londoners dropped to the bottom of the league for the first time since winning the Championship last season after Villa and
Everton both picked up their first wins of the season.
They are level on points with West Ham and Leicester, but Palace have conceded 20 goals in their first eight games.
“It’s tough to be on the end of that,” Kaminski told PalaceTV.
“It was a really rough way for the group to lose the game. It’s a good finish, but we have to learn to manage those moments better.
“We rode a really rough patch in the game where we did well to keep it at bay, and we scored a fantastic goal at the end of that spell, but
unfortunately we haven’t protected that.
“We’re coming to the point where we could get a point on the road and we have let that slip.
“We keep saying: ‘We’re only a few games into the WSL’ but I need the group to learn quickly from that. We should be taking something home.”
Charlton Athletic extended their winless Championship run to five games after they lost 2-1 at home to Bristol City on Sunday.
The Addicks have gone from early-season promotion hopefuls to being eighth in the table and five points off table-toppers Birmingham.
Early goals from Lexi Lloyd-Smith and Libby Bance saw the Robins race into a two-goal lead after 17 minutes.
Jodie Hutton netted in the 41st minute to pull one back for Karen Hills’ side, but they were unable to find an equaliser in the second half.
Charlton head to rivals Palace on Sunday for their Women’s League Cup group stage clash.
London City Lionesses recorded their first back-to-back defeats in the Championship under Jocelyn Precheur after a 3-2 loss at Durham on Sunday.
Isobel Goodwin scored twice but it was not enough to see the Hayes Lane-based side close the gap to the top of the table.
Millwall Lionesses were knocked out of the Capital Women’s Cup after a 2-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur’s WSL academy.
The visitors were two goals ahead at The Den after 36 minutes and managed to hold on to progress despite Esme Johnson scoring three minutes before the end of the first half.
Ted Jones’ side saw their six-game unbeaten run come to an end.
“It was a performance we were proud of against a really good side,” said Jones. “We probably deserved the draw and to maybe take the game to penalties. They have youth internationals, so they’re a very good side.
“We were defensively very good, but we just didn’t get that luck going forward. If we keep playing like that in the league, we will keep picking up wins.”
AFC Wimbledon suffered a 2-0 defeat at Lewes on Sunday.
