World number one Iga Swiatek produced some of her very best tennis as she brushed aside Spaniard Sara Sorribes Tormo on Centre Court this afternoon.

The top seed won 6-2/6-0 in little over an hour and advances to Friday’s third round – one step short of her 2021 fourth round best here.

However she will be hoping to go much further than that this time – and on this showing will be hard to beat.

An unforced error from Sorribes Tormo gave the Pole her first break at 2-0, and although the Spaniard broke back in the very next game, Swiatek’s advantage was restored at 3-1 thanks to another unforced error.

There were no mistakes from the four-time Grand Slam champion in the next game, holding to love, and although Sorribes Tormo made it 4-2, the Swiatek serve was now holding firm.

Swiatek took the crucial first point on her opponent’s serve at 5-2, a fine forehand pass putting pressure on the Spanish world number 84.

Two set points were brought up when Sorribes Tormo hit long, and although she saved the first with a fine backhand volley, the favourite’s backhand cross-court pass was too strong for the Spaniard, and Swiatek took the set 6-2.

The second set was a procession. Swiatek running through it 6-0, with some scintillating play.

A perfect lob from the Pole, followed by a fine forehand pass, contributed to her first break of serve. In the next game she produced passes off both the forehand, down the line, and backhand, cross-court, as she approached her very best.

She broke again with a comical slap forehand down the line while on her knees, and from there on it was a foregone conclusion.

At 0-5 Sorribes Tormo saved one match point with a strong serve, but Swiatek secured the win with a pass down the line.
