Wycombe forward turns down international call-up to stay for Charlton clash

Wycombe forward Tjay de Barr has turned down an international call-up with Gibraltar to be available for tomorrow’s clash against Charlton Athletic.

The 23-year-old signed for the Chairboys in 2021 but has broken into the starting line-up under new boss Matt Bloomfield.

De Barr has made 14 appearances in all competitions this season for Wycombe and has started the last two League One outings, playing 60 minutes against Bristol Rovers and 80 minutes in the 1-0 defeat to Barnsley last weekend.

He will miss Gibraltar’s Euro 2024 qualifiers against Greece and the Netherlands. The former Eastleigh loanee has won 30 caps for his country.

Speaking to BBC Three Counties Radio, De Barr said: “It was a very, very tough decision. Playing for my country is the best feeling in the world and people probably won’t understand the feeling I get when I play for my country, so they won’t understand the level of difficulty it has taken for me to stay here and play for Wycombe.

“But I see an opportunity now that I need to grasp. We haven’t many games left and we’ve got to do everything possible to get into the play-offs.”

Wycombe head to The Valley on Saturday eighth in the League One table and four points off the top six.
