St Saviour’s and St Olave’s School in Southwark scoops national cheerleading prize

A group of 32 Year 7 and 8 students from St Saviour’s & St Olave’s School have won first prize at a national cheerleading competition.

They scooped the title in the junior level category of the Legacy Alpha & Omega Schools & University National Championships on Saturday, February 22 at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Stratford, East London.

Their cheerleading routine consisted of jumps, stunts, tumbling and dance, all perfectly timed to music.

This was the first time that the school, in New Kent Road, Elephant & Castle, had entered into a cheerleading competition, with the team being the youngest to compete that day.

Most had never performed any sort of dance or gymnastics routine in front of an audience before.

But their display was their best ever – and it won them the championship.

PE teacher Tara Finnegan said: “Since September, the students have been training each week to learn and perfect their routine and I am overjoyed to say that their hard work paid off and they were crowned champions of their division.”

Each student received a medal to recognise their achievement.
