Steve Morison on his successful strike partnership with Lee Gregory at Millwall
Steve Morison has revealed what his relationship was like with strike partner Lee Gregory in his third stint at Millwall.
From 2015-2017, the duo started together in 71 games and scored 66 goals between them.
The strike duo were key to Millwall’s promotion from League One, and it was Gregory’s header that set up Morison to score an 85th minute winner in the play-off final for the South London club.
“There is no words for it, it just happened,” Morison told Wall Talk.
“We didn’t practice it, we didn’t train in certain ways. We had a half relationship off the pitch, Lee would come every now and then to ‘Thursday club’. He used to hang out with the northern boys, as they used to stick together.
“I really can’t explain it, it just worked. He had played on his own the season before, he did alright for Millwall. He scored a few goals, but most of them had come in three games.
“Lee had done alright, but when I came in, it just worked. I definitely changed my game when I came in, I didn’t do as much. He did more of what I would do previously.
“I’d learnt some dark arts of the game and I improved my game in certain areas. Greggs used to make runs and I used to find him.
“We would do bits and pieces as pairs on the training ground. The gaffer would always take the strikers away, when the defenders and midfielders were working on shape. We would work on finishing, but we never worked on link up play, like you saw on the pitch.
“Greggs used to know where to go when I had the ball and we had a purple patch as a pair. It shows how much a partnership can work because before I came, and after I left, he never was the same.
“[My first season back] was a decent season, we were a good team, it took us a little while to get going.
“We started to evolve as a football club and as a team. On the back of that you had Lee and I who were scoring 40 goals a season between us, which is always going to get you into a good position.”
