Suspension peril could see Charlton key man not feature at Cheltenham

Charlton Athletic manager Dean Holden is faced with a dilemma over whether to play captain George Dobson in Sunday’s League One fixture at Cheltenham.

The former Sunderland and AFC Wimbledon midfielder collected his 14th booking of the season in last weekend’s win over Port Vale.

If Dobson collects another yellow in the final match of the 2022-23 campaign he would serve a three-match ban which would kick in at the start of the new season.

The 25-year-old has been cautioned in three of his last four outings.

Dobson was booked 16 times in his first season with Charlton.

Asked if he would sideline Dobson at Whaddon Road, Holden told the South London Press: “I’ve not decided yet. I was made aware of it earlier in the week. There is a bit of risk involved for next season.

“It seems a ridiculous rule to me but it has always been there. It’s not the case with George but you could go to another club and have a suspension. But it is one of the rules and you’ve got to get on with it, even if you don’t agree with it.”
