This Millwall player described as ‘outstanding’ in 1-1 draw at Preston

Gary Rowett picked out Jed Wallace as Millwall’s best performer in today’s 1-1 draw at Preston North End.

The 27-year-old assisted the Lions equaliser when his teasing delivery was met by the head of Murray Wallace.

Rowett said: “Jed was our best player. Jed was outstanding today. It was a top performance and we just needed one or two more to follow his lead.

“Jed was excellent, he kept picking it up in pockets. At times he was a bit unplayable and what you need with that is the rest of the team to come alive. We didn’t quite do that.

“These games you just need a bit of brilliance. Jed Wallace has a chance that is saved, then Danny [McNamara]. I said to him: ‘It’s probably easier than your two goals [last week]’. He just needed to lift it. Anything over a foot goes in, then Kief has a great shot not long afterwards that the keeper either tips on to the post or it hits the post, so you look at those moments. We could’ve played with a bit more quality today.

“I ask our front three to do a lot of work, but what we have to do is if they are going to do that work defensively then we have to give them a little bit more quality service. We struggled to do that.

“It was a tough game for our midfield two. Billy Mitchell found it really difficult today – it will be a good lesson for him at this stage of the season. He’s played so many games and has been so good for us. Today, he just looked a little bit fatigued on and off the ball but he’ll learn and grow from that.

“It’s a point away from home and if that was at the start of the season we would be quite happy with that performance and point – but we’re at the stage every time you don’t win the game it becomes frustrating.”
