Two police officers injured in West End stabbing

Two police officers on duty in central London have been stabbed, one of them seriously.

The male officers were attacked by a man in an area of Whitcomb Street, near Leicester Square, at around 6am this morning.

Both are being treated in hospital.

A man, believed to be in his 20s, was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and assaulting an emergency worker.

The Metropolitan Police have said a taser gun was used to subdue the arrested man, who was also taken to hospital for treatment.

A spokesman said: “Enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing.”

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said the attack was “utterly appalling”.

“These brave officers were doing their duty and assisting the public at this momentous time for our country,” he said.

“My thoughts and prayers are with them, their loved ones and police colleagues following this disgraceful attack.”
