Waterloo’s BFI IMAX reopens after major upgrades

The nation’s most immersive cinema, Waterloo’s BFI IMAX, has reopened after major upgrades.

The UK’s biggest screen is now 65 ft high (the equivalent of five double decker buses) and 85 ft wide.

Its advanced laser projection allows for a crisper quality, brightness and vibrancy which brings images to life in 2D and 3D screenings.

The powerful 12-channel surround sound system adds to this for a truly heightened sense of realism.

It is currently screening Black Panther: Wakanda Forever which will be replaced on December 16 with Avatar: The Way of Water.

IMAX chief sales officer Giovanni Dolci said: “The BFI IMAX theatre is one of London’s great symbols of culture and community, and we’re thrilled to bring our audiences an even more cutting-edge and immersive moviegoing experience at this much-loved and internationally recognized destination.

“This is one of our top-performing screens worldwide and a venue of choice for some of cinema’s greatest film-makers, and we’re excited for fans to return to the BFI with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Avatar: The Way of Water and a strong slate of ambitious movies ahead.”

Since 1999, London’s BFI IMAX has played host to some of the world’s biggest film premieres including Mission Impossible, Inception, The Batman and X-Men: Apocalypse.

Attendees of these screenings have included Leonardo Dicaprio, Angelina Jolie, Tom Cruise, Hugh Jackman, The Rock and Prince William.

Improvements also include new seats, carpeting and four wheelchair spaces in its 493 seater auditorium to accommodate a luxury experience for its yearly average of 300,000 visitors.

Current ticket prices range from £14-25.
