Young recycling enthusiast meets his hi-vis heroes

A young recycling enthusiast met his hi-vis heroes and joined them in taking the bins out in his neighbourhood.

Southwark’s recycling crew visited a young resident with big ideas for his future in waste management.

At just five years old, Roman Lopez, from Walworth already knows he wants to work in recycling when he is older.

At such a young age he’s already at the forefront of the next generation of eco leaders, never failing to pull his neighbours’ bins out for his recycling crew every week.

His mother said he has an abundance of toy trucks to keep him occupied, too, and has insisted they all be stickered with the Veolia logo, which operates Southwark’s recycling services, to look just like the trucks he sees out and about.

Last month Roman’s local recycling crew visited him at home to congratulate him on all his hard work.

After all the time he’s spent helping his neighbours, he was delighted to join the crew as they collected and emptied the bins.

When all the hard work was over, Roman sat in the cab with the crew and received his very own hi-vis jacket to match his toys.

Matthew Crane, Veolia Southwark regional manager, said: “It brings a sense of pride to see a young resident take such an interest in our hard work.

“The teams always enjoy engaging with the local community, so it is especially rewarding when we get to meet the future generation of eco leaders, like Roman. There’s a place for him with Veolia Southwark when he’s older.”

Southwark councillor Catherine Rose said: “Not all superheroes wear capes, Roman wears hi-vis! His passion for refuse trucks and recycling is shared by many other young residents and those young at heart, too.

“Roman is an inspirational young man, taking an active role in creating a cleaner, greener environment for us all.

“We look forward to Roman joining our team in the future and contributing to our efforts in reducing waste and promoting a better sustainable future.”
