22-year-old to stand for Lib Dems at London Assembly elections

A 22-year-old has been selected to run as the candidate for the London Assembly elections in May this year.

Chris Annous, who has been dubbed a “rising star” by the Liberal Democrats, plans to tackle both racism and environmental issues.

The Greenwich local’s campaign will call for the banning of suspicionless stop and searches by the Metropolitan Police, and for all arrests to be recorded using body cameras.

Mr Annous, pictured above, said more young people were needed in politics and was inspired to stand after frustrations with current politicians.

He told the South London Press: “I’ve been campaigning for a fairer society for years now, but my complete and utter disappointment with politicians in 2020 inspired me to stand.

“Nationally, the Tory government’s cronyism, arrogance and dishonesty during this pandemic has enraged me.

“In London, I’ve been incredibly disappointed by Labour’s response to the Black Lives Matter Movement. Sadiq Khan and London Labour have failed to use this opportunity to tackle the racism that blights many people’s lives here in Greenwich and Lewisham.

“I guess I’m therefore just fed up with politicians taking us for granted around here.

“I think we need more young people to get into politics so we can inject the new ideas and solutions needed to bring about this change. So that’s why I decided to stand.”
